Evelyn Faye 11 Months

Evelyn Faye!  You are a verb.  ALWAYS MOVING.

And you are anything but boring.  Your personality is hilarious.  You constantly have us laughing.

You walk.  You run.  You dance.  You climb.  You whistle.  YES, YOU WHISTLE!

You’ve actually been whistling since you were about 8 months.  You discovered it on accident.  Your lips happened to be in that shape, and you breathed, and it made a sound!  You thought it was hilarious.  You’ve randomly done it since then, and we’ve never been able to catch a video of it.  You’re at the point now where we can coax you into whistling, and you know what to do to make the noise.  It’s the funniest thing.  You think so too.  You always smile and laugh after you do it.

You have grown really attached to blankets.  You like to drag them everywhere with you.  It’s not necessarily any particular blanket.  You don’t care which one you have, as long as you have one.

Evelyn-Faye-11-months14

Evelyn-Faye-11-months12

Evelyn-Faye-11-months16

You also love to rearrange furniture if it’s not too heavy for you.  You push your high chair, the bar stools, the kitchen chairs, the dining room chairs, the coffee table… etc.  Of course, while holding your blankie.

Evelyn-Faye-11-months13

You’ve discovered boxes, and how cool they are.  And that is wonderful to me.  I feel like there’s nothing more imaginative than playing with a box!

Evelyn-Faye-11-months8

This past month you had to have ear-tube surgery.  You were getting constant ear infections, and you were so miserable.  The hospital staff was so sweet to you, and you handled everything like a champ.  You did so great during all the prep.  I didn’t expect you to do well.  You didn’t even cry once.

Evelyn-Faye-11-months3

After the surgery, things immediately improved for you.  You FINALLY were able to start sleeping the whole night consistently.  You could finally eat a whole bottle all at once.  It’s amazing how much your demeanor changed once you weren’t in constant pain anymore.

Evelyn-Faye-11-monthsI18

You have figured out how to sit and rock in your little rocking chair Grandpa Burton made you.  You love to scoot it around and find the perfect place to sit.

Evelyn-Faye-11-months15

Stairs are your favorite thing.  You are lightning fast going up them.  But, you don’t like to come down them.  The concept of going backwards doesn’t jive with you.  You always try to go forward down the stairs.  Luckily we’re always there to catch you.

Evelyn-Faye-11-months6

You will never snuggle and take naps with me.  Only daddy.  You two are the cutest best friends I’ve ever seen.

Evelyn-Faye-11-months2

Evelyn-Faye-11-months5

Christmas has been really magical for you.  Even though you don’t understand yet, you are taking in all the magic, and the wonder reflects in your eyes.

Evelyn-Faye-11-months7

Evelyn-Faye-11-monthsI20

You loved watching daddy hang the Christmas lights outside your window.  I’m pretty certain that you wanted to be out on the roof with him, helping.

Evelyn-Faye-11-months9

Let’s talk about your hair for a second, Evelyn Faye.  It is out of control!  The back is SO curly.  But after you sleep on it, it gets so nappy and tangly.  We have to put lotion in your hair every day to tame it, otherwise it is all over the place.  You didn’t get it from me or dad.  Both of our hair is straight straight straight.

Evelyn-Faye-11-months10

Pre-tamed, out of control hair:

Evelyn-Faye-11-months11

Whenever we take the puppies outside, you always wait by the door.  You love them SO much.  You also love to squish your face against the glass.

You say “doggie” all the time.  You love playing with them.  You love everything about them.  You love when we come home because letting the dogs out of their crate is your favorite.  You learned how to undo the latch all on your own.   (excuse the messy dog-room)

Evelyn, I love you and your daddy so much.  (and your little baby fetus sister too!)  The closer we get to your first birthday, the more emotional I get.  I feel like I’ve known you forever.  You’ve never been a stranger to me.  I KNOW we knew each other before this life.  I love being around you.  I love learning from you.  I have a feeling that you’re going to be constantly teaching me lessons for the rest of my life.  And I am most definitely up for it.

8, 9, 10 Months

Oh Evelyn. The fact that is has taken 3 months to write a monthly update will tell you how the past 3 months have been.

BUSY.  FAST.

You are growing and changing so fast I can barely keep up with you. Every morning when you wake up, I see a new little girl, and I wonder where my baby went.   You turn more and more into yourself each day.  As fast as your body grows, so does your brain.  I see you learn and discover new things daily, and it surprises me and blows me away how much you know!

8 months Evelyn Faye

8 months Evelyn Faye

You have such a sense of humor.  You laugh at everything.  You make yourself laugh.  You have the sweetest belly laugh, but you also have a sassy little chuckle you do when you crack yourself up.

8,9,10 months Evelyn Faye

If there’s a floor vent around, you’ll be drawn to it like a magnet.  You love the way it sounds when you run your hand up and down the metal.  You’ve also discovered that you can squish things into vents.  Which is becoming a problem.  I found you trying to smash some of your baby food puffs into the vent just this weekend.

8,9,10 months Evelyn Faye

This summer in the basement was extra hard on you, but you handled it like a champion.  Nap times were very difficult.  We would covered-wagon your crib with a black blanket, and as you can see, it was very effective.

8,9,10 months Evelyn Faye

We took you to the Parade of Homes, and you were SO happy.  You loved being packed around in the Ergo.  I think it reminded you of Disneyland 🙂

When you were about 6 months, you had a little bump that grew on your cheek.  At first it looked like baby acne, and so we waited for it to go away.  It didn’t go away, and your great pediatrician had to open it with a scalpel and drain it.  We thought that would do the trick, but after a couple months it never healed all the way, and it came back worse.  It turned out to be a pilomatricoma.  It was a non-cancerous calcium tumor in your cheek, so we had to see the only pediatric dermatologist in the state to get it removed.

pilomatricoma

The hardest part for you wasn’t getting it removed, although that WAS hard.  The very hardest part was the stitches.  It took 4 men to hold you still enough for the doctor to stitch you up.

Evelyn Faye

You are undeniably a daddy’s girl.  You love me pretty good, but nothing compares to when daddy gets home from work.  You are obsessed with him and won’t leave his side.  It is a happiness that I don’t have enough words to explain!

Evelyn Faye

You LOVE bath time.  Baths are your happy place.

Evelyn Faye

Evelyn Faye

Over the summer you started standing and walking holding onto furniture or a walker.  And when you were 9 months, you were taking steps all by yourself!

8,9,10 months5

Right after we moved into our house, we were just about ready to get you ready for bed, and you were walking back and forth between mommy and daddy.  You tripped and hit your lip so hard on a corner.  Your lip split wide open.  It was gushing blood, and we couldn’t tell how bad it was through all the blood.  So. Much. Blood.  We took a trip to the ER to see if you needed stitches.  Luckily you didn’t.  I was relieved since your first set of stitches was so traumatic.  You did have a very nice battle wound for awhile.

Evelyn Faye

We leave one of the cupboards un-baby-proofed for you.  It’s the mixing bowl storage.  YOU LOVE IT.  You love stacking them.  You love putting the smaller bowls in the bigger bowls.  You love putting the bowls on your head.  You love the colors.  You love to move them around.  The kitchen is NEVER clean because there are bowls everywhere.  But it makes me so happy to see you learn and discover.  I love seeing your imagination grow.  I would much rather have you play with mixing bowls instead of toys.  That is how creativity is born.  I hope you see the beauty in imagination as you grow up.

Evelyn Faye

You’ve discovered “people food.”  You always want to eat whatever we are eating.  And you always love it!  You love our vegetables.  You love our chicken.  You love our pasta.  You love our rice.  You love food.  All food.  You aren’t a picky eater.  I decided to give you a mini cupcake to see what you did with it, and to practice for your first birthday 🙂

Evelyn Faye

On Fridays we get to hang out with your cousin Dylan.  Sometimes we go to Nicklecade.  He wanted so badly to spend some of his nickles so you could do some rides.  It was so sweet.  He picked a fighter jet for you, because we love airplanes in this family.  You were unsure at first, but after the 3rd time of Dylan wanting you to ride it, you started to have a lot of fun.  Dylan LOVES you.

Evelyn Faye

One Sunday morning I was painting my nails, and daddy said, “Should we paint Evelyn’s toe nails???”  I said, if you can get her to hold still enough, I’ll do it.  And sure enough, he got you to hold still.  And you had some pretty pink toes!

Evelyn Faye

10 months Evelyn Faye

One of the most incredibly frustrating things is you WILL NOT hold your own bottle.  You completely refuse.  It’s not a matter of if you can, it’s that you are so stubborn you simply won’t do it.  You can walk, but you won’t hold a bottle.  It’s frustrating.  I see little babies at the store holding their bottles while the mommies shop… and I get very jealous.

10 months Evelyn Faye

On a cuter note, if we stick our tongue out at you, you’ll do it back.  And it is so funny.  Then you laugh.  You think it’s hilarious.

10 months Evelyn Faye

Evelyn, you are a diamond.  You sparkle and shine and reflect light.  There is something so special about you.  You make everyone around you happy.  You love everyone.  You let anyone hold you and snuggle you.  You make everyone feel loved.  You keep everyone around you laughing.  You always have something cute to do.   You love seeing people laugh.  When people laugh, you laugh.  I hope you always take great care to love people and cheer them up.  I know it will be a blessing to many people in your life!  I love being your mommy.  You and I have the strongest of bonds.  I love you sugar.

What a month.  You never.hold.still.  … ever.20140731-212825

Evelyn, this month you learned to crawl, and our lives have completely changed.  Nothing is safe from you.

You never want to be held or sit still.  It has made church a little rough.  I mean, I can’t really blame her.  I’d rather explore under the pews than listen to high counsel speakers too.

Evelyn Faye 7 month baby

You are obsessed with the hymn book.  When it’s open, you love to grab and smack it as hard as you can.  We usually get some interesting looks.

Evelyn Faye 7 month baby

Sometimes I’m not sure why we even bother trying to go since we spend more time in the halls than in the service.

Evelyn Faye 7 month baby

You’ve hit a major growth spurt this month, length-wise.  A lot of your clothes are still 3 month and 6 months, but your legs are getting so long.  No surprise about that though.

Evelyn Faye 7 month baby

You’ve started pulling yourself up to stand, so we had to lower your crib stat!  I’ve never seen you look prouder than the first time you did it.  You were so pleased.  I was not.

Evelyn Faye 7 month baby

You’ve been able to spend so much time with your cousins over at grandma’s house this summer.  Both Molly & Dylan love you SO much.  They love to play with you.  You love the attention.

Evelyn Faye 7 month baby

We took you on a house-hunting adventure with us, and you enjoyed exploring and snooping as much as mom & dad.

Evelyn Faye 7 month baby

This month we got stuck in a ridiculous traffic jam, at which time you decided you were starving and it would be good to let me know by screaming your brains out.  I whipped out my mad mom skills, made a bottle, fed you, AND took a selfie to prove it, all whilst driving.

Evelyn Faye 7 month baby

Water always makes you the happiest.  It’s the cure-all for your moodiness.  You’re a little sea creature.

Evelyn Faye 7 month baby

Dance time with Aunt Heidi is also one of your favorite activities.  Your smile goes on for days.

Evelyn Faye 7 month baby

Evelyn Faye 7 month baby

Sometimes I get a little sad because I think you don’t look anything like me.  But then I remember we have the same nose, and that’s enough.

Evelyn Faye 7 month baby

You got a bug bite on your cheek that got infected and turned into a big cyst.  The doctor had to drain it with a scalpel.  It was the saddest thing.  It took 3 nurses to hold you down.

Evelyn Faye 7 month baby

Your night time sleeping has improved so much.  We don’t have to swaddle you or blindfold you at night (naps are another story).

Evelyn Faye 7 month baby

We’ve turned a corner with the dogs, especially Buster.  When you go to sleep (at night AND naps) Buster will go to the side of your crib and beg and whine until we put him in there with you.  Then he just snuggles up to you.

Evelyn, sometimes being your mum is a challenge.  Sometimes I feel like giving up.  It’s really hard.  Some mornings when you’re up bright and early, and I’m exhausted beyond belief, I beg to Heavenly Father to give me the strength to make it through the day and not take my struggles out on you.  It’s those days that you make me laugh the most, that you smile the most, and that you make me proud the most.  I love you sugar drop.  Thanks for keeping me humble (and active!).

Evelyn Faye – 5 Months Old

Evelyn Faye 5 MonthsEvelyn, you took a huge leap in growth physically & mentally.  You are changing so fast.  You are so expressive and responsive.

Most of our month has revolved around you eating food.  I guess I forgot how difficult learning to eat was.

Evelyn Faye 5 months

The first week of solids was a very messy week!  2 baths a day!  But you have finally realized that it’s more fun to swallow food than take it out and rub it on your face.  You eat rice cereal, applesauce and bananas.  You have a very sensitive tummy, so we have had to go really slow at introducing new flavors to you.  We’re going to work on sweet potatoes this week.

Evelyn Faye 5 months

We went to visit our friends at Equity.  They all loved you so much.  They were your cheerleaders from day one.  Hong especially.  She ate gluten free with me for moral support and force fed me gummy prenatal vitamins.  She was fighting for you just as hard as I was.  More people love you than you’ll ever know!

Evelyn Faye 5 months

Another one of those people is Aunt Heidi.  You are extra special to her.  Every day she drowns you in kisses.  You always smile so big when you see her, and then you just stare.  She loves you so much.  She dances with you and sings to you.

Evelyn Faye 5 months

We took you to Janae’s orchestra concert.  You were happier as soon as I laid you on the floor, weirdo. 🙂

Evelyn Faye 5 months

You are absolutely a morning person.  You wake up with such a happy demeanor.  You are alert and so giggly.  I enjoy our mornings together!

Evelyn Faye 5 months

You actually LOVE getting dressed.  You’re starting to understand the sequence.  You’ll lift your arms up, or your legs, or pull your arms out.  You get so happy when we change your clothes.

Evelyn Faye 5 months

All month long you were still wearing all your 3 month clothes.  You’re a petit little baby, but the doctor isn’t worried.  You’re little, but you’re solid.  Lots of good muscle on you!

Evelyn Faye 5 monthsYou are getting so wiggly, that pictures on the changing table aren’t really working out anymore.

Evelyn Faye 5 months

Evelyn Faye 5 months

You only hold still in your sleep, and I’m okay with that!  I love how active and wiggly you are.

Evelyn Faye 5 months

I found a little fedora for you.  You definitely love wearing hats!  I think hats make you feel fancy 🙂

Evelyn Faye 5 months

Evelyn Faye 5 months

You’ve started to be aware of the dogs.  You always look for them in a room.  You turn to them, and you’ve started to reach for them.

Evelyn Faye 5 months

You’re still a little scary to Buster.  Indy seems to like you though.

Evelyn Faye 5 months

This month has given me some challenging days with you.  For several days on end you have been extremely fussy and upset.  You don’t purple cry (which I’m grateful for) but you fuss and whine all day.  There’s nothing I can do to sooth you.  And the more frustrated I get, the more frustrated YOU get.  You are very sensitive to my mood.  I’ve had many moments were I wonder if I am cut out for motherhood.  I feel completely unequipped for the job.  It gets discouraging sometimes.  There are times where I just cry because I don’t know what to do.  I’ve said out loud to you “I don’t know what you want!”  Which I know is illogical.  I know you can’t tell me what you want.  But I get so frustrated when I try every thing and none of it is what you want.  I just want to make you happy.  Being a mom is the greatest joy I’ve known, and even on the hard days, when I see your sweet little face I know that I have a forgiving Heavenly Father who is patient with my shortcomings as a mum.

Evelyn Faye 5 months

You have been using my baby blanket.  I know you don’t know the significance, but it seems like you have gotten really attached to it really fast.  When you fall asleep holding onto it, it melts my heart.  I can’t leave the nursery.  I sit and watch you sleep.

Evelyn Faye 5 months

When daddy is home, you two are inseparable.  (Even when you are catching z’s.)

Evelyn Faye 5 months

He is so good at playing with you.  He gets down on the floor and makes all kinds of sounds I’ve never heard an adult make.  You laugh at his dad jokes, which right now consist of blowing air on your face and in your ears.Evelyn Faye 5 months

One of my favorite things about your development, has been the discovery of your feet!  You are always reaching for them and often try to put them in your mouth.  It makes you giggle.   I’m sure you know how silly feet-in-the-mouth are.

Evelyn Faye 5 months

As you learn and grow, I learn and grow too.  Please be patient with me as I learn how to be your mama.  I’m still trying to figure out what works and what doesn’t work.  I’m trying to be patient with myself.  I promise that no matter how hard it gets I won’t throw in the towel.  I’m never going to be perfect, and I’m going to make a lot of mistakes.  But I’ll always love you.  And I’ll never forget what a true miracle you are.

4 Months

I’m a little late on posting this.  Life.

But we sure had a beautiful 4th month with little Ev.

You are the most reverent baby at church.

Evelyn Faye 4 Months (4)

The floor is your favorite place in the world.  When you are fussy, you’d rather be laid down on the floor.  You also eat on the floor.  You don’t like to be held too much.

Evelyn Faye 4 Months (14)

It is fascinating to watch you grow and learn.  You can hold your bottle by yourself while you eat.  Sometimes you let go and drop it, and you need help finding your mouth.  But you’ve made the connection that it’s food and it goes in your mouth.

Evelyn Faye 4 Months (2)

You are getting the hang of play time.  You reach for things and grab things.  You’ve made the mental connection that when you see something, you can reach for it and grab it and hold it.

Evelyn Faye 4 Months (3)

You are SO strong.  You can hold a “baby push-up” for about 30 seconds at a time.  Your development seems ahead of the curve in most aspects, based on the generic timelines that are published.  You are usually a couple weeks early than what is expected.

Evelyn Faye 4 Months (15)

Having a daughter is so fun.  We get to play dress up every day.  We’re lucky because we get so many of Molly’s hand-me-downs.  There’s never a shortage of clothes!

Evelyn Faye 4 Months (1)

You are so easy to take on outings.  Everyone loves you where we go.  You took your first trip to the motherland (IKEA).

Evelyn Faye 4 Months (6)

Me and grandma got brave and took you and Molly with us to get pedicures.  And everyone at the salon just gobbled you guys up!

Evelyn Faye 4 Months (7)

Sometimes we go and visit daddy during his lunch breaks.  And you are always SO happy to see him.  And he is even happier to see you.

Evelyn Faye 4 Months (8)

You give him the best snuggles in the world.  You don’t snuggle anyone half as good as you snuggle your daddy.  It is beautiful to see how much you love him.

Evelyn Faye 4 Months (5)

And even more beautiful, is how much he loves you.

Evelyn Faye 4 Months (10)

Evelyn Faye 4 Months (13)

Dad was in a skeeball league, so we took you to practice.  And it was cute.

Evelyn Faye 4 Months (11)

Each day Buster inches closer and closer to you.

Evelyn Faye 4 Months (9)

You have wiggling down pat.

Dealing With Negativity

Dealing With Negativity

Dear Evelyn,

No matter how kind you try to be, no matter how much you try to please everyone, no matter how accommodating you think you’re being, it won’t be enough.  But it isn’t because you’re not enough.

There will be people who choose to be upset.  There will be people who choose not to like you.  There will be people who have the wrong idea about you.  There will be people who put you down.  There will be people who make you feel bad.

And it will suck.

It’s the hard part of life.

You’ll feel bad.  You won’t understand why.  You’ll be sad because you feel like you’ve tried so hard, and it wasn’t good enough.

These people might be friends.  They might be your siblings.  They might be coworkers.  They might be neighbors.

If you’re like me, you’ll take it personally.  You’ll want to retreat.  You’ll want to disappear because you don’t like the feeling of letting people down.  It might feel like too much to deal with.

You’ll hear people say negative things about you.  And you’ll think, “No!  They have the wrong idea!  They don’t understand the whole picture.”  And it hurts.  And it makes you sad.

But it’s part of life.  And you can’t change someone else.  You can’t change what people choose to think and believe.

There are things you have control over, and there are things you don’t.

You have control over you.  There is a lot of power that comes with that realization.

No one’s opinion of you matters.  If you are trying to be the best person you can be, then what else is there to do?

It’s so difficult to not take other people’s actions personally.  But the best thing to remember is to simply be kind.  Everyone is fighting a battle.  And most times when someone’s actions are negative toward you, it’s most likely because they are dealing with their own battle, and they are hurt.  The best thing you can do is to love.

If you let someone else’s negativity affect you, you are allowing your spirit to be poisoned.

So always remember, the best way to deal with negativity is to be kind and not take it personally.  Never give up on yourself.  You are enough.

Everything is always okay in the end.
So if it’s not okay, then it’s not the end.

I love you, and nothing you can do will ever make me stop loving you.

Love, Mum.

3 Months

Everything they say about 3 months old is true.  She is officially an infant, and no longer a newborn in the slightest.  Evelyn is so aware of everything around her.  You can just see it in her eyes as she registers things in her mind.  I would give anything to peek inside her head to see the world as she does.

Evelyn Faye actually interacts now.  When you look at her and smile, she smiles back.

This month we had to make the switch from breastmilk to formula.  It was really hard on me.  Physically and emotionally.  The process of stopping making milk was extremely painful for me.  But there was a medication I needed to take for PCOS that couldn’t be taken while nursing.  Evelyn completely rejected formula.  She wouldn’t eat.  She would spit it out.  She was starving and screaming, but wouldn’t eat.  She went a whole day without anything to eat.  We tried to sneak formula into the breastmilk, but she knew.  It was a very very rough transition.  It took about a week for her to finally start eating.  She still isn’t great at eating, but she will eat enough to not starve.  She was only eating 2 oz at a time.  Starting YESTERDAY she finally started eating 4 oz per feeding.  It has been a tough 4 weeks, but seeing her formula-eating improve makes me very happy!

We got this formula mixer to help the transition be easier for US.  haha.  And I have to say, I LOVE it.  It’s so nice to push a button, and have a bottle instantly ready.  We call it “The Baby Keurig.”

Evelyn Faye Three Months

Evelyn is very picky in the way she eats.  She does not like to be held.  She prefers to be laid down on her back to be fed.  #missindependent

Evelyn Faye Three Months

She’s getting more and more independent by the day.  She only likes to snuggle on her terms.  Being in the wrap isn’t her favorite.  She tolerates it though if she can wiggle her arms out.

Mama likes to do squats while wearing baby.

Evelyn Faye Three Months

The dogs now follow her around.  Indy brings her toys.  Buster watches over her.  They still don’t touch or cuddle her, but that’s okay.

Evelyn Faye Three Months

I feel incredibly blessed that I get to be a stay at home mama to Evelyn.  I take every opportunity to hold her while she sleeps and count my blessings.  I never want these moments to become “normal.”  They are special.  They are moments I dreamed of my whole life.  I memorize everything about these moments,  because I know there will be a day where I don’t get to rock her to sleep.  If I don’t soak it all in, I know that I will regret it.  My heart bursts with gratitude.  It’s humbling to know I’m trusted with such a precious Being.

When Evelyn is awake, she pushes the envelope of what she can do.  Her neck and back are so so strong.  She enjoys sitting in her Bumbo.

Evelyn Faye’s Baby Blessing

The leading reason for this blog is to keep a journal.  I was a major journal-keeper when I was younger.  I wrote in my journal every.single.day through jr high, high school, and my early 20’s.  Since getting married, I have been awful at it.  And it really nagged at me.  Aaron taught me to love blogging.  I love that I can use this blog as a journal for our major events.

Every girl dreams of her wedding dress from the time she’s a little girl.  From the second I knew we were expecting a little girl, I dreamed of her blessing dress.  The process of creating it was very similar.

Marlene Shepherd is a very special person to me.  She is more than just a friend and neighbor.  She loved me like one of her own children.  She is an incredibly talented and skilled seamstress.  She has made every important dress I’ve worn, including my blessing dress, all my dance dresses, my wedding dress, and my temple dress.  It was only fitting that she would make my daughter’s blessing dress.

Of course we needed to take a picture of Evelyn Faye wearing my blessing dress.

Evelyn Faye Blessing

My mom, my mother in law, me, and Evelyn all packed up and went to Marlene’s house to design and come up with a plan for this special dress.  It was the quintessential planning committee.

Evelyn Faye's Baby Blessing

We went through boxes of patterns, and tons of pictures on Pinterest, and lots of fabric samples.  Evelyn had a good time hanging out in them.  It was so fun to have the grandmas involved.  🙂

Evelyn Faye's Baby Blessing

This was the design we came up with for her sweet dress.   It had a peter pan collar, with a half circle skirt and lace overlay.  We decided to go with an ivory satin instead of a bright white.

Evelyn Faye's Baby Blessing

This was the finished product!  Marlene is incredible.

Evelyn Faye's Baby Blessing

Evelyn looked like such an angel in it.  She’s quite sassy.  Taking names, and throwing punches.

Evelyn Faye's Baby Blessing

This was the morning while we were finishing getting ready for church.  I’ve never seen anything sweeter.

Evelyn Faye's Baby Blessing

She had been really sick the week leading up to this, so we were really nervous how she would do.  She had been really really fussy all week long.  But she slept the whole time.

Evelyn Faye's Baby Blessing

March 2nd was an extra special blessing day.  Evelyn got to share it with her 2nd cousin Felix.  My cousin Adam & his wife Beth got to bless Felix on the same day.  We love being in the same ward as them.

Every day it’s still so surreal that she is my daughter.

Evelyn is a complete miracle to us.  She is the most beautiful and perfect manifestation of our love and God’s love for us.

I would do anything to keep her safe from any unkind thing in this world.

This is a special rocking chair made for her by her Grandpa Burton.  He makes a rocking chair for each of his grandchildren to give them on their blessing day.  He also made one for her dolly.

Having Evelyn has brought so much gladness into my life.  It has strengthened my relationship with my own parents.  It has strengthened my relationship with my inlaws.  It has strengthened my relationship with God.  I find that my prayers are a lot more heartfelt and earnest.  I pray for her safety and well being.  I sacrifice myself and my desires to take care of her needs.  I cling to the Savior for strength in ways I never did before.  I’m so grateful for motherhood and the ways it has changed me.

Two Two Two Fast!

Evelyn Faye is 2 months.  This age is so much fun.  Evelyn is absolutely enjoyable.  Her temperament is cheerful and charming.  She has captivated our hearts.  Every minute with her is most excellent.

We had to put away her newborn clothes because her tiny body outgrew them.  Many Kenz-tears were shed.

For awhile, 3 month clothes were too big, but newborn clothes were small.  The generic 0-3 onesies fit pretty well, so I got creative with them.

This is how we spent Valentine’s day.  Sewing, Great Mouse Detective, and sleeping.  Aaron was pretty sore from his car accident, so he rested up.

Evelyn loves her car seat.  I tell her it’s like a Disneyland ride.  It makes me think she’ll love Disneyland in June.  Time will tell!

We underwent using diapers from The Honest Co. this month.  We love them!  They are eco friendly,  and extra gentle on Ev’s bum.  Did I mention they are extra absorbent and flexible?!  We haven’t had any blow outs since switching.  And they’re pretty dang adorable.

Speaking of blowouts…

It was a Sunday morning.  Seconds after taking this picture, Evelyn was still sitting there, propped up on Aaron.  When she had the most massive blowout.  There was poop all over Aaron, and all over our bed.  Poop everywhere.  It got in her hair.  I don’t know how.  But it was a hot mess.  Needless to say, we did not make it to church this day.

Evelyn got to meet cousin Felix who came six weeks early, and was born 4 days after her.

We went to Aunt Kami’s PTA school so they could practice pediatric physical therapy.  It was really neat to watch the reflexes and exercises they do with a 2 month old.

One of our biggest discoveries is how much Evelyn loves taking baths and showers with us.  It must be a combination of the skin to skin and the warm water.  In the bath, we use Lush all natural bath bombs.  The aroma always calms Evelyn down and sends her into a nice little slumber.  It’s adorable.

Evelyn is the most beautiful sleeper.  I could watch her sleep for hours.  I also think she looks the most like me when she’s asleep.

The most unusual things calm Evelyn down when she is fussy.

Nyan Cat will stop her crying instantly.

She also loves to “swim.”

Evelyn loves her baby gym.

When she is awake, she doesn’t like to hold still.  Aaron nicknamed her Wiggly Jo.

Mortality

Sick Baby

I have heard mamas say watching your child be sick or struggle is one of the most painful things to go through.  I always thought “Yeah, that would be hard.”  I had no idea HOW hard until I experienced it for myself.

I had my first life experience watching my child, of my own flesh and blood, get sick, and not be able to fix it.

I’m a problem solver.  When things are broken, I fix them.  When there’s a problem, I find a solution.  When others are having a hard time, I want to fix it for them.

I had to watch Evelyn suffer.  She was miserable without understanding.  She would look at me helplessly with her sick eyes, begging for me to fix it.  And I couldn’t.  I had to listen to her cough til she would throw up.  My heart would break.  So many times I wished that I could be the one sick if she could be healthy.  I would rather carry the burden for her.

Even asleep, she looked miserable.  This lasted for two weeks.

Sick Baby

I’ve found that often the hardest experiences I’ve gone through, are the most spiritual, and the times I’m the most teachable.

So badly I wanted to teach Evelyn about my favorite scripture, D&C 122:7-9.

7 And if thou shouldst be cast into the pit, or into the hands of murderers, and the sentence of death passed upon thee; if thou be cast into the deep; if the billowing surge conspire against thee; if fierce winds become thine enemy; if the heavens gather blackness, and all the elements combine to hedge up the way; and above all, if the very jaws of hell shall gape open the mouth wide after thee, know thou, my son, that all these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good.

8 The Son of Man hath descended below them all. Art thou greater than he?

9 Therefore, hold on thy way, and the priesthood shall remain with thee; for their bounds are set, they cannot pass. Thy days are known, and thy years shall not be numbered less; therefore, fear not what man can do, for God shall be with you forever and ever.

When Joseph Smith was in the middle of what seemed to be the most miserable experience of his life, he asked for it to be taken away.  Heavenly Father didn’t.  I love the whole passage where he explains that all experiences shall be for our good.

But my favorite line is “hold on thy way.”  This phrase got me through the toughest times in my life.  It’s the most tender way of saying endure to the end.

God didn’t take away the pain of the atonement for the Savior.  And as a parent, I can’t imagine how painful it was to watch.  I watched Evelyn have a cold, and that just about did me in.  To watch your Son take on the pains of entire mankind would be excruciating.

It may sound silly, but I feel closer to my Heavenly Father after this experience.  And I know He will always give us strength to get through our mortal trials.  That’s why we are here.  He loves us, and it IS hard for Him to watch us go through hard things.  But that doesn’t take His love away from us.  It increases.

So Evelyn, this is the first of many trials in your life.  Hold on thy way!
